Introduction

Congratulations!

Congratulations on your new home! A home is one of the only purchases you can make that involves months of work across many different skilled trades to create. From the architects and engineers that design a home to the framers, plumbers, electricians, painters, and countless others that assemble it, thousands of hours of work went into the final product that you now live in. Like with anything handmade, you have to spend some time and effort on care and maintenance to keep your home performing at its best. Not only will this keep your home and its systems running well, it will also save you money in the long run. Performing routine maintenance can prevent costly problems from arising. A few minutes each month can save you lots of time and money in the long run.

A Strategy For Home Maintenance

In most homes you want to focus on a few key objectives in your maintenance plan:

  1. Keep your home safe, healthy, and comfortable for all occupants;
  2. Help your home retain its value; and,
  3. Make your home cost effective to run.

Your home is comprised of complex parts and products and a good maintenance plan addresses these. You want to keep the environment in and around your home safe and you want the systems in your home to perform well. As a homeowner, your enemies are:

  1. moisture
  2. unsafe temperature
  3. bad air quality

Much of the routine maintenance you'll perform helps with these factors. Every home is unique and this guide obviously can't include everything needed for every home. The location, design, and individual parts in your home all contribute to the overall maintenance you need to do. My hope, however, is that this guide can cover the basics you need to know to get started on being a responsible homeowner! Whenever you're performing maintenance or taking on tasks in your home make sure you are careful of your surroundings and take all necessary precautions to keep yourself and others safe! If you don't know how to do something, especially if it involves electricity, plumbing, or you getting high in the air, be sure to ask for help from a pro.
